Fun List

I saw this on my friend Bev's blog and decided to play along.

Aprons- Y/N? I should get one someday. I make a horrible mess, and it seems like the more it stains (like tomato sauce), the more likely it is that I'll spill it.
Baking- Favorite thing to bake? hmm. something with chocolate in it. anything with chocolate in it, actually.
Clothesline- Y/N? Not in an apartment! Maybe when we get a house, maybe.
Donuts- Ever made them? Two or three times. Made them with Kenny once or twice, and once with Josh, though the oil was old the last time and we both got sick from them. So I'm not in a hurry to make them again, though it was fun and they were delicious!
Everyday- One homemaking thing you do everyday? Dishes. I want a dishwasher!!
Freezer- Do you have a separate deep freezer? Not in an apartment!
Garbage Disposal- Y/N? Yes, but it doesn't really work well.
Handbook- Y/N? There's a homemaking handbook? (I'll have to go follow her link and see what on earth this means!)
Ironing- Love it or hate it? I don't mind it when I'm doing it, but I'm dreadfully slow and put it off as long as possible.
Junk Drawer- Where is it? We don't have one, just lots of "hot spots." (sigh)
Kitchen- Design and decorating? Maybe when we have a house!
Love- What is your favorite part of homemaking? Organizing. I love seeing a closet, drawer, shelf or area looking better than it did when I started, and organizing feels slightly more long-term than just cleaning does, which needs to be done again the next day or week.
Mop- Y/N? Not if I can help it!
Nylons- Wash them by hand or in the washer? Definitely the washer (in a lingerie bag)
Oven- Do you use the window or open it to check? Open it to check (no light!)
Pizza- What do you put on yours? pepperoni, ham, bacon and tons of cheese
Quiet- What do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment? make scrapbook pages or sleep
Recipe card box- Y/N? I have one, but I have a ton of recipes I need to write on cards so they can be sorted.
Style of house- 2-bedroom apartment. And house-hunting :)
Tablecloths and napkins- Y/N? I have a tablecloth, but usually use placemats because the tablecloth keeps ending up on the floor (thanks, Jasmine). The placemats do too, but they can be replaced with more like it, so I don't have to wash them so quickly.
Under the kitchen sink- Not too bad...just a garbage can and spare bags, I think (unless Josh put something else under there)
Vacuum- How many times a week? one-two, but it could be more since Jasmine likes to snack on crumbly foods around the house!
Wash- How many loads do you do a week? 4-5
X’s- Do you keep a list of things to do and cross them off? Most definitely. I love lists :)
Yard- Who does what? I'll let you know when we have one! Right now maintenance does all of it!
ZZZ’s- What is your last homemaking task for the day? I don't have a specific thing I do at night; depends on what's there/needs to be done.

If you read all of this, consider yourself tagged!

Nice thing to wake up to!

I got up this morning when Rebekah decided she'd had enough time in bed (so we came out, sat in my arm chair, and she nursed to sleep!!!) When I checked my email, I had a message from Sinead at the digi chick: one of my layouts was chosen as "Layout of the Day!" What an exciting treat :)

So here's the layout:
You can see it, and the credits and comments, here.

In other news, I got 2 beautiful smiles from Rebekah yesterday. I think we're past the "I smile when my tummy's happy" stage and to the "I smile when you tell me you love me!" stage :) I love it!

And we're going to see two houses on Friday. One, we saw last week and really loved, but we don't want to rush into anything. The other is a really cute cape cod a couple blocks from the first. Same square footage, but one more bedroom and bathroom, which would be good things to have. So we'll see!

Loyalties

Happy Friday :)

One of my more prominent character traits is loyalty. I consider that it's sometimes a weakness, though Josh said he doesn't think it's anything to consider a bad thing.
For one thing, I'm a Wegmans girl. I was even when I didn't want to think about working there (since everyone in my high school worked there, it made me want to stay away). We hated Tops, the other supermarket chain, simply because it wasn't Wegmans (now I have other reasons for disliking Tops, like their consistently bad customer service). So it worked out well that I worked in the bakery all the way through college (and got a scholarship from them my third and fourth years).
Once I've decided I like something, it can be hard to turn me away from it. I'm loyal to Istanbul, and Turkey in general, even when I hear about something in the news that makes me sad. I had a really hard time admitting to liking the new version of Sabrina, simply because it wasn't the Audrey Hepburn version (it did finally win me over, though). When I found a hairdresser I wasn't even willing to look at anywhere else.
I've been thinking of this more lately because I don't have a home for my scrapbook designing at the moment. I've been in two stores, both of which closed shortly after I started selling (not my fault, really. I'm more like Howard Bannister, and less like Judy Maxwell...it's out of my control, but the hotel management might be threatening to kick me out because I'm the one they see).
I have my "big dreams" of designing someday at my favorite scrapping site, but since it's one of the bigger sites, they want people who have some selling already under their belts. So part of me thinks I should look to one of the smaller, newer sites and get some experience...but I have a really hard time considering selling somewhere that I would leave when I got a better offer. Just seems so disloyal, like I'm "using" them.
I know part of my loyalty also comes because I take things very personally. As though Wegmans cares if I suddenly started shopping at Tops. Or the Yankees would be personally insulted if I rooted for the Cardinals for one game. I know those are extreme cases, but it's still something I think about.
Anyone else struggle with this? Am I just being silly?

Here are a few layouts from the past couple days:

The Mind of a Princess

Jasmine's word of the week: "sowwy." We say "sorry" when we bump into her (or each other) so somehow she's come to associate it with something quite different from its intended meaning. Haven't figured out what, exactly, that is.
She was very helpful and brought over a receiving blanket when Rebekah spit up a couple hours ago, but then decided she'd be helpful and clean it up for me...I wasn't quite so ecstatic about that much help, and tried to tell her that I should do it, but that she was very sweet to offer to help. :)
Her rash seems to be coming back, though it hasn't gotten much worse since Tuesday so hopefully it will clear up quickly. Her feet are itchy, but I don't think her legs itch. Poor punkin!
Rebekah is getting more alert and aware, which is fun. It's neat to watch her look around and try to figure out her world. Maybe she'll figure out Jasmine before we do :)
A couple more cute morsels:
Jasmine's new favorite thing to watch is Season One of the Muppet Show (which she calls "Kermint.") At the end of every episode, right after Zoot plays the wrong note at the end of the theme song, she says, "that's funny!" :) and she walks around the house saying "banana" (which sounds more like "BAH-nah-nah"), thanks to multiple references to bananas on the show.

How well do you know us?

I was going through old emails from Josh last night and today, and I found a link to a quiz I made up a year ago. So I decided to make an updated version, since some of the questions are wrong now...

Virkler Quiz #2

Meanwhile, Josh is on his way home so I can get a nap. Jasmine decided she didn't need to sleep this afternoon, in spite of the fact that she was falling asleep at her high chair at lunch. So Rebekah and I will go sleep, and hopefully Josh can get her to sleep out here. I'm very thankful...Rebekah was awake a bunch last night, never crying, but awake and needing to be nursed/burped/changed.

Name Fun

I decided that, for the moment, the slide picture is my favorite. I love the hair in every direction and the fun feel to the picture. A couple friends of mine commented on how all the pictures had Jasmine in motion. Yup! :)

Best Picture of 2006?

They're having a "photo challenge" on thedigichick.com to decide on our favorite picture from our collection, from 2006. I have it down to 7, and can't decide from there. Josh couldn't, either, and Jasmine loves them all!

So I thought I'd see what you think! Which is your favorite? (and why, if you feel like expanding on your decision) I'd love to hear! (click on any to see a much larger version)

"9-month" picture and first bath

We had a lovely dinner last night, watching a sweet movie ("Finding Buck McHenry") and enjoying the fact that Rebekah decided to show up early. I'm so thankful that I'm not pregnant anymore, even though the whole thing flew by and I was feeling good. It's much nicer to be able to hold and kiss my little girl :)

Josh took some pictures of my "belly" since it was 9 months: Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

We also gave her a real bath since she lost her umbilical cord, and of course pictures had to be taken!

She wasn't sure what she thought of it, and thought less and less of the whole thing as it went on. Her hair dried incredibly quickly, and is now sticking straight up, which is also very amusing.

"It's a Knock!"

Everything Jasmine says now starts with "it's a." Josh was holding her outside the bathroom door when I finished my shower, and I heard a faint "It's a knock!" so I had to let her in :) She looks at Rebekah and says "It's a baby" or sometimes "It's a Placido," which is funny since we haven't said anything about her being Placido. Somehow she figured it out on her own!

Today was my due date! We had already made plans to celebrate by ordering Olive Garden (to go) and having it here with the bottle of sparkling grape juice from Katie. So we're going to do that anyways, just with the joy of holding Rebekah, instead of wondering when she'd feel like coming!

Daniel, my brother (the second boy, child #3, who's now, um, 26, I believe) just got accepted into med school!! I'm so proud of him! He deserves it...he's worked really hard to get this far and will make an incredible doctor. So congratulations Daniel!!

Jasmine is happily watching "Lella" (Cinderella) and Rebekah just fell asleep nursing, so I should put her down and get lunch warmed up.

Baby Word Art Freebie

I made this before Rebekah was born, and it really doesn't apply much to her since she tries her hardest not to cry :) But I still think it's funny and thought I'd share it with you!

Instead of changing the website I'll just put the link up here...but please feel free to check out my other kits at www.joshandcharlene.com!

A Sister's Love

I was taking pictures of Rebekah this morning, and Jasmine came in to see what was going on. I loved this picture!! (of course, it helps that I adore both of them!)

(credits: everything is from Amy Knepper's "Young and Carefree" kit, and the layout is a scraplift of Darla Vasquez's "Perfect Hat" layout)

Overall, we're doing well transitioning from having Daddy around all the time, though nothing much is getting done. I'm trying hard to keep from doing too much and slowing down my recovery time, which is hard to do. Jasmine has discovered my Vintage Sesame Street DVDs (which is likely part of why she's suddenly so good at identifying circles!) She's a little sponge, soaking up everything in sight/hearing distance. She likes to "count" (3,6,9,4!) and whenever she sees anything with words, it's "E,F,I" so she's figuring out that symbols on the page have a meaning. She may be teaching herself to read before I teach her!

Happy Valentine's Day!

I kinda fizzled out on my long, "romantic" posts about Josh. I haven't been feeling terribly articulate since Rebekah was born; everything I tried to write came out sounding flat.

So I let my creativity do what it does best and made a layout for him! This pretty much sums up everything :)

You can see the credits for this at TDC.

Hope everyone is staying warm and safe today!

Rebekah Fluff

She's almost exactly a week old now! She lost her cord this morning and now weighs 7#6oz, which is exciting. It feels good to know my milk is doing its job :)
Jasmine has really warmed up to her. She played peek-a-boo with her this morning (with close supervision) and has decided it's fun to kiss her (again, with very close supervision).
My family finally got to come out tonight (minus Amy, who didn't feel great. Hopefully she can meet her soon!) The little boys wanted to hold her, but we all decided it would be better to wait until she's a little bit stronger. She lifted her head up when I held her to my chest, so her neck is definitely getting strong, but she's still a lot more fragile than Jasmine was when we met her.

#2 He Balances Me

At some point during the night last night, I was thinking about how I used to enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles. I've done one since we got married (and helped with a couple at my family's house). Now that we have a toddler and a newborn, it may be awhile before I can do one. I'm okay with that, but someday I'd like to do puzzles again.
My idea of a good time (if I can't go out to a fun restaurant or visit Istanbul, anyways) is to read a book, do jigsaw puzzles, scrapbook...yeah. Pretty exciting stuff. I'm not a loner, but I've always been very independent and don't mind being alone for long periods of time.
Josh's idea of a good time is to snowboard, ride a racing bike, 4-wheel through mud, ski... you get the idea. How did we end up together? God has a great sense of humor and knew that we would look past the surface issues and see how we really did fit together perfectly. (and we have found a few things that we truly had in common before we met...we both went to the same two Carman concerts in the early 90s, which is neat since he was one of our favorite singer/entertainers growing up and how many opportunities would we have to be in the same place at the same time, growing up in separate cities?
Now, he still hasn't gotten me to do any of those things yet, and I haven't gotten him to do my favorite things either, but that's not the point. We complement each other. We balance each other out. And that's a nice feeling!

Yeah, I know this isn't a new idea!

I was reading on my friend Bev's blog an idea I thought would be a lot of fun to do myself. So I hope she doesn't mind :)

From now until Valentine's Day, or at least whenever I get a chance to type (which is harder with two who still like to be in my arms!!), I'm going to spend a few minutes writing about the things I love about Josh.

(for anyone who knew me in college and beyond, you might find this funny, since I always said I thought the day was silly. I saw so many men coming in to the supermarket on the 13th and 14th, very stressed, paying 3 times as much (likely much more, actually) on roses and chocolates as they would cost the rest of the year, just hoping to stay out of the doghouse. So we don't do a whole lot on that day, though our first married V-day we went to Casa Loma, which was an unforgettably romantic day!)

#1: He has an amazing way with words

Since we met online, our first communication was via email. For the first week, we hadn't heard each other's voice, or seen more than a couple pictures but we knew each other very well because we were both open as we wrote back and forth. (it's really, really funny that I write this tonight, since being articulate has not been my forte lately, but especially today...) After 2 days of writing, Amy came into the dining room to see me laughing out loud as I read the newest email from Josh. Funny, friendly, and articulate, I fell deeper in love with each email.

Fast-forward to 2007: whenever I have something to write that anyone else will see, I run it past him first. It's fun to get his feedback (and another pair of eyes in case I made any typos), and he can often help me come up with a more concise and meaningful way of putting something (the quintessential example of this: this very post has gone through many revisions after reading it to him!). But my favorite use of his gift is when he sends me emails (or IMs) that make me laugh, cry or feel all mushy (or all three at once).

More Pictures :)

We're home! We got home at about 10 this morning...they had to do bloodwork when she was 24 hours old, so if we had gone home last night, in the frigid temps, we would have had to go back out this morning. So we just hung on and came home first thing today instead!

She is so perfect. I think she prefers not to cry (though she doesn't particularly like getting her diaper changed) and usually just tries to let me know she's hungry by rooting, rather than fussing. I'm praying that continues! So far she's living up to her "Placido" name :)

Would you like to see? I've had fun...Jasmine never sits still long enough for me to play with my camera to try to get better pictures, so I've enjoyed her quiet nature and have already taken 80 pictures of her (though I'm sure a bunch will get deleted, since they're the same just taken at an ever-so-slightly different angle).

edited to add: Tally wins for being right on with the weight. I'll email you and Deena :) I must say, I laughed when I kept getting guesses of 7 pounds, thinking there was no way this baby would be that small. Boy, was I wrong!! :)

Welcome Rebekah Jane!

Jasmine has a baby sister! Rebekah Jane was born on February 5 at 9:02 p.m. She weighed 7 pounds even (well, 7 pounds, 0.7 ounces, if you want to be exact) and is 20.5 inches long. She’s absolutely perfect! Nursing beautifully, calm and peaceful and a great sleeper (and we’re praying that continues!!) and so beautiful. I feel fantastic…a bit tired but really good. We’ll likely come home from the hospital tomorrow morning, since she was born so late at night and needs bloodwork done at or after 24 hours…and in -25 degree windchill, we don’t want to have to make a trip back out here tomorrow. (So Josh is posting this for me, since there’s no internet connection at the hospital).

Birth Story

12:40 a.m. Water broke, 11 days early!

12:45 a.m. called mom and midwife to let them know what was happening. Tried to go back to sleep. (occasional contractions)

4:30 a.m. nursed Jasmine to sleep, contractions started more regularly but then stopped again.

9:00 a.m. everyone got up, called Josh’s parents to figure out when we’d bring Jasmine to them and how to plan things.

12:00 p.m. walked the mall, hoping to get contractions going. No luck.

1:00 p.m. met up with mom, went to the hospital together, were admitted after they verified that my water had, indeed, broken. 2 cm, 80% effaced, a couple contractions the monitor picked up but that I didn’t feel.

1:30 p.m. started a small amount of pitocin. Contractions started and were consistent, but I couldn’t feel them (nice problem!)

4:30 p.m. contractions were consistently 2:20 apart. Josh called the midwife, but since I wasn’t feeling any pressure she was going to see a few more patients before coming out. Mom wasn’t sure the midwife would make it in time, since she just figured I wasn’t going to feel anything!

5:00 p.m. upped pitocin. I could feel the contractions, but as long as I relaxed through them they didn’t hurt. Still about 2:20-2:30 apart. 3 cm, 90% effaced.

6:15 p.m. midwife arrived, upped pitocin again. 4 cm dilated.

8:30 p.m. nurse suggested having me lie on my side instead of sitting tailor-style, hoping it would move my tailbone and finish the dilation. 6 cm and “loose.”

8:45 p.m. transition hit…felt sick, knew the end had to be near because it was too intense to keep going on like that.

9:00 p.m. wanted to push; got the go-ahead.

9:02 p.m. 2 pushes and she was out!

APGAR score: 8 and 9

"De Polls Are Closed"

My water broke this morning! So the baby will be here today (or very early tomorrow)! Looks like Deena won for being the closest to my date, but I'll also give one to the person whose guess on baby's stats is the closest :)

If you pray, I'd love any prayers that contractions start to get more regular, since they don't mess with water having broken. Also that everything is smooth and easy, with no complications. I'm praying for a simple, straight-forward birth this time!!

In other news, I was very excited to find out that Darla, one of the Chicks at TDC whose layouts I always admire, has made a layout using a picture I sent her of Jasmine. You can see the credits and comments here.

Quick Update

Thanks to everyone who got the quickpage! Hope you enjoy it :)

I went out with my mom and two of my three sisters (very sad that Amy had to work) this morning for a "girls' day out" before the baby came. Josh and Jasmine had fun at home, and we had fun getting our hair done, going to Cheesecake Factory for lunch (delicious, but a looooong wait!) and then I got my makeup done. I'm excited to say I bought some eyeliner that Josh will love because it's his very favorite color (teal) :)

And a picture of what I look like today (Josh is snowboarding so I took my own picture...sorry about the camera in the picture!) I'm guessing this baby is 8 1/2 pounds now, if s/he is on par with Jasmine's weight!!!

I Am A Promise

Anyone remember that old song? I was trying to decide what I wanted the focus of my layout to be, and that song popped into my head. What could be more appropriate for a picture of a 3-hour old baby??? :)

This is my first attempt at a "freestyle" layout, which is supposed to be "do whatever you want," but usually involves more, um, creativity than I feel that I have. I was very nervous to do this, but as I looked around the web for examples of freestyle, I saw that there could still be order to the page, which made it much easier for me to tackle.

I used a whole bunch of my buttons, which was fun to get the opportunity to play with them!
Credits can be found here.

Don't forget...leave a comment on the last post to tell me when the baby will be born and what all the stats will be. Can't wait to see who's right :) And you can still get the freebie for another 2 days, so snatch it before it's not a freebie anymore!!
